Gioteck EX-05 Headset Review at 16:55 - Score 4/5 -, There seems to have been a recent massive increase in the popularity of solid, sturdy, all-in-one console headsets. Whether this is because of the increasing impracticalities inherent with setting up 7.1 systems, or is a result of wives and girlfriends the world over putting down the collective feet and demanding their partners use something a bit more considerate, remains unclear. But whatever the reason, headsets that combine game audio with in-game chat are very much in demand at the moment.

And Gioteck is jumping on that particular bandwagon with the release of its latest range of peripherals, more specifically the fantastic-looking EX-05 military style range of headsets. Compatible with PS3, Xbox 360 and PC, the EX-05 is an extremely versatile piece of kit and comes complete with all the universal connectors required to get you up and running in next to no time.
I'm focusing on the wired, stereo version of the EX-05 here, but Gioteck does have wireless and surround-sound options available, all at extremely reasonable prices too. The wired version of the EX-05 is USB powered meaning no batteries or mains-connections are required, and comes with an extremely long cable meaning you can hide it out of the way and play even if your 360 is at the opposite side of the room. It does occasionally get tangled-up but show me a 5m+ cable that doesn't.

The wide head band means the headset stays firmly in place and doesn't fall off your head when you vociferously shout and gesticulate at your TV, which if you're anything like me you'll do an awful lot. It's futuristic black and navy camouflage stylings also mean it's contemporary and stylish and looks much more than the part than my white cheap-looing plastic Turtle Beach headset. The Ex-05 conveniently separates game audio from voice chat and has individual controls for each, meaning you turn your friends up loud to hear them over the game. The microphone is sleek and responsive and looks the part thanks to not having a cheap-looking styrofoam muffler on the end.
One issue I've had with headsets in the past is that the headband resistance and rigidity is too great, which often leaves you feeling like your head is being squashed in a vice. Thankfully, the EX-05's headphones are soft and comfortable and offer just the right balance between rigidity and flexibility.
It's also immediately evident just how great a job of noise-cancelling the headset does. With the sound turned up you can barely hear yourself speak, which really helps with the immersion. One area where the EX-05 does suffer - which unfortunately is also the case with most other headsets I've used in the past - is when you're playing and simultaneously charging your 360 joypad's rechargeable battery. Having the USB charging cable connected causes an annoying audible buzz and a substantial level of interference.
This too is evident in my Turtle Beach headset and is undoubtedly a challenge hardware manufacturers are going to have to work hard at eliminating. Putting batteries in your controller soon alleviates this, though. I should also hasten to add that those of you using HDMI output on your 360s will need to buy an optical connector adaptor in order to connect the red and white phono jacks required for stereo output. While the EX-05 does ultimately suffer from being stereo only, it still comes highly recommended thanks to its bargain price of £35.00. When you consider an official 360 headset costs £15-£20, well it's a no-brainer.
For those of you without a surround set up, or with tired and grumpy loved ones sick and tired of your late night shooty-shooty-bang-bang shenanigans, it's well worth a purchase. The headset looks the part, feels the part and most importantly, sounds the part. Check out the rest of Gioteck's product range at.
