Daz Studio Pro 4.10 For Mac
The purpose of this tutorial is to provide a reference for those new to DAZ Studio and just learning to install products without the DAZ Install Manager for the first time. Please feel free to link to it! This comes up frequently on the forum and in my private messages.
Usually what happens is that I get a message to the effect of 'Hi! I bought a product from Renderosity/downloaded a freebie from ShareCG, and now I get a 'missing file' error when I try to use it.' It is always possible for errors in packaging to happen, and in that case of course we want to fix it on the vendor end, but most of the time this happens because the product is not installed correctly.
Let's start out by suggesting some good practices for organizing your folders. Directory And File Management (IMPORTANT!) I suggest having a separate directory set up in your DS for each vendor (DAZ, Renderosity, Freebies, etc.) so you can always tell what you got where and how it is licensed. You can add a new directory by right-clicking on the words 'DAZ Studio Formats' in your Content Library at the top of the leftmost panel (usually) in DAZ Studio. Then choose the words 'Add A Base Directory' and give it a useful name ('Renderosity,' 'ShareCG freebies,' etc.). You should also have a separate folder set up for keeping your downloaded zip archives. This is not accessed from inside DAZ Studio, so it doesn't matter where you keep it. What's important is that it is also organized into subfolders by separate vendors or web sites so you can keep track of what came from where.
You should have a folder for Renderosity, Hivewire, RDNA, ShareCG, and whatever other third-party sites you use. I will refer to this as your zip archives. Downloading and Unzipping a File When you download a file from a vendor or freebie site it will be in.zip, or occasionally in.rar format. Windows can unzip files by default, but can be cumbersome in the way it handles them. I suggest the program, which I use myself, and which allows itself to be easily accessed by right-clicking. In any case, the first thing you should do is save your download into its proper place in your zip archives. Do not download directly to your DAZ Library.
This creates messy, disorganized files and is a bad practice. Once the download is complete, right-click on the file and unzip it to a new subfolder. In 7Zip you would right-click and choose 'Extract to 'Name of File'.' This will unzip your files into a folder with the name of the zip file.

The reason I recommend this is that it puts everything in one place, including the documentation and any advertising or screenshots (a common inclusion in MOSTDIgital creations freebies, for instance), so you don't have a lot of loose files where they don't belong. Copying Files To Your DAZ Library Now it's time to put things in their proper places. Your zip file probably contained a lot of subfolders. It may have started from a folder called Content, My Library, or My DAZ3D Library.
Do not copy this base folder. Starting from here can cause errors. Instead, click through until you find the level of the data files. You will be looking at a series of folders that are called data, People, Props, Runtime. This will vary depending on what sort of item you downloaded, of course.

If it is a light set it might just be a folder called Lights or Light Presets. The important thing is that you are NOT copying the Content or My Library folder. Copy all of the folders at the level of data, People, Runtime, etc. Now it is time to paste them into their proper directory. Here's how to make absolutely sure they go to the right place! Unfortunately I can only go into this for Windows, since I don't own a Mac. Start up DAZ Studio.
On the left, in your Content Library screen, right-click on the name of your base directory ('DAZ Products,' 'Renderosity,' 'ShareCG Freebies,' etc.) and choose 'Browse to folder location.' A window will pop up with the location of the exact base directory that you created. Right-click in the window and paste the files you copied. Now you should see your data, People, Runtime, etc. Folders here with no base folder above them.
Using Your New Content In DAZ Studio, right-click on the words 'DAZ Studio Formats' at the top of your Content Library panel and choose 'Refresh.' Now your new product should appear, right in the directory where you pasted it. You're good to go! Happy Rendering! Thank you so much for being so helpful. I have a question, but not just for SY.
I've been around a long time, but I've never been able to organize my content properly as I have things going back ten years or more to times when other practices were used. I have a bunch of stuff and I'm not sure how to organize it so it makes sense and doesn't cause problems. Plus, people used to say, a long time ago, just to toss whatever is in your content folder into your runtime folder. Plus, I have things like two Utilities directories under smart content because of a typo. And for some reason, I have poser items showing up in smart content, so there are duplicated items - both a daz and a poser version of the same item. How would you fix something like this?
I don't even know where to begin. I sent you a Note, DAZ is quite new to me and the whole thing is not as straight forward as the other 3D software like Source Filmmaker once you put in a 3rd party content.
So I hope your advice is working. PS: I can't get DAZ Forum to approve my Topic for unknown reason, but I condemn their heavy moderation, they could have given me the reason why the thread is not posted in the first place yet alone the website doesn't indicate any updates on the thread like what you see the status in any parcel delivery status in postal websites. Hi,can some one explain where to put these folders that get unzipped and have no data names to identify where I should drop them. I have a folder called P7Temp, now the name is irrelevant but it is a real folder. Inside is similar named files. By looking at properties i see that they are.jpg now i have been using daz a long time but i am no techie, now where woulkd i put a folder full of.jpg? I find many also full of.obj that also dont have an identifying data name.
Ok and a list of unidentifiable.bmps same scenerio and.wmv files sorry i have such a huge content and always end up with these strays when i clean out and reload everything. Also another question. I travel and i take a laptop, when i get home i want to move my creations to my main pc.but always they become currupted. How can i do this in an easy laymans term.
Daz Studio Latest Version
Its Content gatherer a really good product for this. Hi, these are all not from the same product, but all from either Renderosity or RDNA, for daz. When some vendors offer freebies they don't add in readme's so files as such,.obj,.jpg, i see them as an image of lines, or a pattern. Or one is for a background image.then.bmp bump map, where should that be dropped? Daz is selling this Inthe begining when i started there were files for both Daz and Poser but then there were files used by both.and i have no idea what should be used from the Poser folders. This information has never been clearly defined, And now with Download Manager I can't tell what files are used. So when after 5 years using Daz you would think I know but using Third party products I am still confused.
Anything you can enlighten me with is greatly appreciateded yours truely braindead wicked pixels. Content Gatherer appears to be meant for packaging something that's already installed correctly. I'm afraid it will not show you how to install if things are not already in their proper places. Where the.bmp has to go depends on how the product was made.
I can't answer the question without seeing the structure of the zip file. Textures SHOULD always be placed in runtime/textures/vendorname/productname, and obj files SHOULD always be placed in runtime/geometries/vendorname/productname, but freebies made by a newbie or poorly made products sometimes have files that reference textures or obj files in the same folder as the.pp2 or.cr2. I would throw those away rather than use them. They're more trouble than they're worth.
The fact of the file being.bmp and not.jpg or.png is also a bad sign - that has been a nonstandard format for Poser and DAZ Studio products for a long time now.
