Kudos to Google, Apple, and anyone else who tries to map the world. Maps ain’t easy to do but they’re everywhere these days, including Apple’s own built-in Maps app on the Mac. The public interest in maps and Maps has spawned something of a cottage app industry for maps apps that specialize in a few useful features rather than re-inventing the maps app wheel (there is such a thing; I checked). Here’s one called that almost has the right idea. The world is changing while we breathe and that means maps need to be updated on an ongoing basis. Maps are never complete, but represent a temporary snapshot of where we’re going, the route we can take, and what’s there when we get there. Ahoy Map Maker makes maps using Apple’s Maps but features a few useful controls so you can share locations or destinations more easily with others than with Maps’ built-in Share sheet.

Not only do you get Apple’s Mac Maps built-in, but Ahoy Map Maker features annotation tools so you can highlight locations on the map, drop in pins, setup notes, change colors and stroke widths of lines, but name everything, too. The free version of Ahoy Map Maker, available on the Mac App Store, has limitations but gives you enough to use it to check out how Maps can be shared. The sharing process isn’t as straightforward as you would expect, though. Instead of using the standard OS X Share sheet (the box with the arrow coming out the top), Ahoy Map Maker relies on a snapshot process which takes a snapshot of the location you want on the map and saves it as a file which can then be shared.

That’s cumbersome but having snapshots can be handy. The free version limited the number of features– like annotations– you can add to a map but the full version, which costs about the same as lunch at McDonald’s, unlocks everything, including unlimited annotations. Think of it as a free Lite version with a modestly priced full version with the same features but more of them.

Now, as useful as Ahoy Map Maker can be, the developer’s website (as of today) is a blank empty page. That’s never a good sign and indicates the developer is relying upon Apple’s Mac App Store for all the promotion and support you might need (nasty reviews usually get attention, or apps get left without upgrades and become zombie-ware.
