I've got ancient PSE9, and see PSE14 is out, was thinking to get that for $77, the disc version because I read some bad experiences with the full digital download install. Besides that, overall for those who have used PSE14 (or even 13 and know 14 updates) what do you think compared to PSE9? Uses will be my wife, who does digital scrap booking and also me for the occasional times I need to use layers. I'm still keeping my photos in libraries in Aperture (RAW from my Canon 70D or jpeg from the multitude of iPhones we have), and do edits in there mostly via Aperture itself, but the times I need layers PSE is easy and works.

I put a copy on a Windows machine I use for some consulting stuff I do to pick up a couple of bucks on the side. As DWFAUST says, it's solid. The pull down menus seem to be pretty much the same as on the standalone PS CS6. One thing I found really useful in the additional 'Enhance' pulldown which gives quick and dirty adjustments of a bunch of different things, color, contrast, and the like. Guess I'll be the outlier here and say that I am not overly impressed with PSE 14. I purchased a macbook pro specifically to get back into (digital) photograph and recalled how Photoshop was king of the hill in prior years. Not wanting the full blown CC and subscription (which I dislike), thought I's start with PSE 14. It seems to be a straightforward application with limited things you can do to a photo. If all you want is a basic photo enhancer, then this will work.

If you want to go beyond, work with RAW photos rather than just JPEGS, I do not think this is the one you want. I also find the support system for PSE 14 extremely weak. I have run into several instance where I got all wrapped up in my shorts and could not figure the solution and posted to the Adobe PSE community for help. Rarely did I get an answer or offer of help.

Further frustration is trying to get help from Adobe website, and they only loop you back to the forum, which I find to be unsatisfactory when you cannot find a solution. I spent time on this forum in an earlier post trying to sort out what to use after my frustration with PSE 14 and finally settled on Infinity Photo at $49.95 for a full subscription and all future updates for a MAC only app. The downside of this app is it is not intuitive, takes time to learn to really utilize all aspects, and has a very good, real time support system on their forum page from both OP and Affinity staff. Maybe later, I might go with some of the higher end applications suggested by OP on this site, but for now, Affinity suits me fine. At the same time, I totally realize what you choose / use is a personal choice and you have to find what you like best.

The big question for existing Elements users is, is it worth upgrading? If you've got Elements 13 or even 12 then probably not. There's isn't a huge amount of innovation going on here, with arguably the two headline features – dehaze and shake reduction – being hand-me-downs from Photoshop CC. The new guided edits are useful, but underneath the lick of paint they're really just Photoshop Actions.

And far from being a new feature, the Refine Selection brush offers nothing more than the brush found in the Elements 13/12/11's Refine Edge command, except now it's slightly easier to find. By presenting the brush as a brand new feature, Adobe has only served to underline the fact that, elsewhere, not a great deal has changed. Perhaps most disappointingly, other than the standard camera format updates, the Camera Raw plugin has been left untouched.

But then maybe that's part of the point. Elements isn't all that interested in appeasing raw-shooting DSLR users – they can get their kicks in Lightroom or CC. It's certainly the best Elements yet, but the improvements are incremental rather than impressive. An already excellent program has been made very slightly better. If you're looking for an entry-level photo editor with a superb learning curve, you can't go wrong. But if you're thinking of upgrading from Elements 12 or 13, then perhaps wait for the next version, or treat yourself to a Creative Cloud subscription instead.
